Episode Summary

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that losing weight will automatically lead to increased happiness and confidence. This belief is perpetuated by the media, which often portrays people who have lost weight as happier and more confident. However, this is a misconception. Weight loss is just one factor that can contribute to happiness and confidence, but it’s not the sole determinant.

While weight loss can positively impact happiness and confidence, the relationship is complex. Losing weight can lead to improvements in physical health, such as reducing the risk of chronic diseases, which can positively impact mental health. Additionally, the sense of accomplishment that comes with achieving weight loss goals can boost self-esteem and confidence.

However, that's about it.

It’s important to note that weight loss is not a guarantee of increased happiness and confidence. It’s possible to lose weight and still struggle with negative body image or low self-esteem. In some cases, losing weight can even exacerbate these issues if the weight loss is not sustainable or if it leads to obsessive behavior or disordered eating.

There are many other factors that contribute to overall well-being, such as relationships, career satisfaction, and personal fulfillment. It’s also important to note that weight loss should never be pursued at the expense of mental or physical health.

So while weight loss can have a positive impact on happiness and confidence, it's not the only factor that contributes to overall well-being. In fact, placing all of our focus on weight loss can sometimes have the opposite effect and lead to increased stress and feelings of inadequacy. That's why it's essential to work on other areas of our lives as well, such as our relationships, career, and hobbies. Focusing on these areas can bring a sense of fulfillment and balance to our lives and ultimately lead to greater happiness and confidence.

Relationships: Positive relationships with family, friends, and partners can have a significant impact on our happiness and well-being. Cultivating these relationships and making time for the people we care about can be a meaningful way to boost our confidence and self-esteem.

Career: Finding a fulfilling career that aligns with our passions and values can bring a sense of purpose and satisfaction to our lives. Focusing on professional growth and development can lead to greater confidence in our abilities and ultimately contribute to overall happiness.

Hobbies: Pursuing hobbies and interests that bring us joy and fulfillment can be a great way to improve our overall well-being. Whether it's playing sports, learning a new skill, or creating art, engaging in activities that we enjoy can help us feel more confident and self-assured.

Working on these other areas of life can have a significant impact on our overall happiness and confidence. When we focus on cultivating positive relationships, pursuing fulfilling careers, and engaging in hobbies we enjoy, we are better able to find a sense of purpose and meaning in our lives. This, in turn, can lead to greater self-confidence and feelings of fulfillment.

So those are some longer-term goals, but in the short term, here are some things you can do.

  • Practise self-care: Self-care can involve anything that makes you feel good, such as taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, or going for a walk. It's important to take some time for yourself each day to do something that makes you feel happy and relaxed. You shouldn't have to wait until you reach your goal weight before taking care of your body and treating yourself better. Engaging in activities that you find fulfilling can help improve your sense of purpose and satisfaction in life. This can include volunteering, pursuing a hobby, or spending time with loved ones.

  • Work with a professional if you are struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression, because if you don't tackle these issues, they may come back and bite you and hinder your progress and cause you to relapse.

Incorporating these strategies into your life can help you create the life that you want, you shouldn't have to put your life on hold while you're trying to lose weight. By focusing on activities that bring you joy, and engaging in meaningful pursuits, you can develop a more balanced and fulfilling life now. Don't fall into the trap of believing that once you lose weight, your life will change suddenly, as if there were a magic wand. Because it doesn't work like that, you better start working towards your goal in life right now.

Let’s look at the case of Tracy, a client of mine who graduated from the stop binge eating program. Tracy had been struggling with her weight for years, and she believed that she would finally be happy when she lost the last 15 pounds. She was so focused on her weight loss goal that she wasn’t enjoying her life. She avoided social events because she didn’t feel good about her body, and she refused to buy new clothes until she reached her goal weight. Actually, Tracy had successfully lost weight in the past. However, she gained it all back because maintaining the weight loss was difficult and she wasn't happy despite being at her goal weight. She was constantly worried about gaining the weight back that she refused to go out with her friends, and she still lacked the confidence to wear the clothes that she'd always wanted to wear.

After working together, Tracy realized that she had been holding herself back from enjoying her life and each of these goals she had to work towards individually. Step by step, we devised a plan for her to chase these goals. She started wearing clothes that made her feel confident and joined a dance class that she had always wanted to try. She stopped waiting to be happy until she lost weight and started living her life in the present moment. And you know what? This time round, not only did Tracy lose weight, but her life is a lot happier and she isn't feeling stressed all the time.

Don’t wait to be happy until you achieve your weight loss goal. Start living your life now, and enjoy the journey along the way.

So today, I'd like you to grab a piece of paper and brainstorm all your “I’ll be happy when…” beliefs. For example, you might write down “I’ll be happy when I lose 10 pounds” or “I’ll be happy when I fit into a certain dress”.

These might be things you’re excited for, but also things you’re not allowing yourself to do or feel just yet. For example, you might be waiting to wear certain clothes or start dating again until you lose weight.

Once you realize you’ve been holding yourself back from doing things you enjoy, it’s time to stop waiting and start living. Stop waiting to be happy until you achieve your weight loss goal. Start living your life now, and focus on the things that bring you joy.

The key to happiness is not weight loss, your life won't magically change when you reach your goal weight.

Achieving your goal weight is a great accomplishment, but the joy of losing weight fades over time. and I can't stress it enough that weight loss doesn't automatically lead to happiness or confidence. It's important to work on achieving other goals in your life, things that make you happy and things that you've been dreaming of doing.

Weight Loss = Happiness? Biggest Weight Loss Myth DEBUNKED (Ep #)

Ever said to yourself, "I'll go on holiday when I lose weight", "I'll be happy if I can fit into that dress?

When we embark on a weight loss journey, we often do so with the hope of feeling more confident and happier. We believe that by achieving our goal weight, we will automatically feel better about ourselves and our lives.

Many of us believe that we will be happier when we achieve our weight loss goals. For example, we might say “I’ll be happy when I fit into my old jeans” or “I’ll be happy when I lose 10 pounds”.

But the truth is, achieving these goals won’t necessarily make us happy.

In reality, achieving our goal weight does not always lead to increased happiness or confidence. While it can certainly improve our health and physical appearance, it does not automatically change our inner world or the way we feel about ourselves. Many people find that even after reaching their goal weight, they still struggle with feelings of self-doubt, low self-esteem, and lack of confidence.

So, if weight loss alone is not the key to happiness and confidence, what is?

In this episode, we'll explore the connection between weight loss and happiness/confidence and provide tips on how to work towards feeling better about ourselves and our lives, regardless of our weight.

In fact, focusing too much on the outcome of our weight loss goals can actually make us miss the potential for happiness that we have right now.
