I feel like some of the people who give these pieces of advice either never have struggled with overeating or binging, or they still do and have no idea how to stop.

The Binge Distraction BS Rant: Exposing the Worst Weight Loss Advice

Let me tell you this...back when I was stuck in a diet-binge cycle, and when the urges hit, all I cared about was FOOOOOD!!!

Seeing my body in the mirror could send me into a downward spiral...

So can having that first mouthful of "forbidden" food...

Listen to my body?... when my body was telling me to eat that pizza, those chips, the entire cake, and the chocolate too?

Sure, listening to my body was gonna solve the problem...

Let's start with a personal favorite: "Just distract yourself when you feel like binging." Ah yes, because nothing cures the urge to consume an entire cake like a quick game of Candy Crush or a Netflix binge. Because clearly, binge eating is just a matter of boredom, not a complex interplay of emotions, hormones, and ingrained behaviors.

Every night after my family went to bed, I'd sneak to the kitchen and raid the food cupboard.

The ideas of having a bath, reaching out to a friend never even crossed my mind.

How about the classic gem: "Just drink water when you're hungry." Really? That's your solution? Because, you know, my body can't tell the difference between thirst and hunger after years of conditioning it to ignore its signals.

Oh, and let's not forget the "chew gum instead of eating" brilliance. Sure, because replacing actual sustenance with flavored rubber is the epitome of health. And the chewing motion just exacerbates the hunger...

And don't even get me started on the "eat this, not that" nonsense.

Like, thanks for the groundbreaking revelation that a salad is lower in calories than a cheeseburger. But newsflash: someone's issues with food aren't rooted in their inability to distinguish between a carrot stick and a candy bar. It's deeper than that, and it requires more than a simple swap to fix.

Let's not overlook the ever-popular "Just eat in moderation" advice.

Moderation? What a novel concept! Thanks for enlightening me with your wisdom. If only it were that easy to turn off the switch that triggers a full-blown binge at the sight of a cookie. If only moderation didn't feel like an unattainable myth perpetuated by those who have never known the struggle of trying to control an insatiable appetite.

And last but certainly not least, the infamous "Just exercise more" mantra....

Ah, yes, because clearly my worth as a person is directly proportional to the number of calories I burn on the treadmill. Because sweating away my self-esteem issues is definitely a sustainable solution to my problems.

How many of these "suggestions" or unsolicited pieces of advice have you received? Tired of hearing from these people who simply have never experienced these urges?

Fear not, there's a light at the end of this tunnel of absurdity.
